GETTY 070313MarkUdall? SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1372910684854Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call(SUBLETTE COUNTY, Wyo.) — A search lasting six days for the younger brother of Colorado Sen. Mark Udall came to a sad ending on Wednesday. The body of James “Randy” Udall was discovered on a Wyoming mountain range, where he had told family he’d be hiking.

Sen. Udall’s brother went missing six days ago while hiking alone in Wyoming’s Wind River Range, and authorities say it appears the 61-year-old died of natural causes, pending an autopsy.

“Where he was at, it was pretty good footing and really no reason to have fallen,” said Sublette County Coroner Donald Schooley.

On Wednesday, the Udall family released a statement about the discovery of “Randy,” Udall as he was known to loved ones.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Randy. Randy’s body was discovered today by the heroic search and rescue team that worked for days to locate him in a remote area of the Wind River Range of Wyoming. Our family is extremely grateful to Sublette County Sheriff Dave Lankford, his staff, Tip Top Search and Rescue, the United States Forest Service, Wyoming Air National Guard, and all others involved for their tireless efforts over the past several days,” the family said in the statement, adding that Randy “left this earth doing what he loved most: hiking in his most favorite mountain range in the world.”

The body of Randy Udall will be transported to Loveland, Colo where an autopsy will be performed at the coroner and Udall’s immediate family.
