MLB? For now, it looks like they’re buyers as they’ve signed Cuban pitcher Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez.

The Phillies were able to land Gonzalez after signing him to a six-year contract worth $50 million. It could be worth as much as $60 million as well. That is the most money given to an international prospect ever, beating Yu Darvish’s previous record

The 26-year-old Gonzalez was a highly sought after free agent after he became cleared for employment on July 15 by the United States government.

Gonzalez was pursued and scouted by a majority of Major League teams, but the Phillies placed the highest bid on him. Reports say the Phillies just beat out the Boston Red Sox as well as the Los Angeles Dodgers.

More than 60 scouts wathced Gonzalez throw in Tijuana.

Gonzalez is 26-years-old and could be making his Major League debut very soon. The Phillies will reportedly send him to the minors to make a few starts to adjust to Major League quality hitters and then call him up sometime in August.
