For the 25-year-old Giroux, he now has the distinction of signing the second-richest deal in franchise history as well.

Giroux still has one year left on his current deal, so the extension kicks in after the 2013-2014 season. His new deal will keep him with the Flyers until he turns 34. Giroux’ deal will also include a full no-movement clause.

Since his rookie season back in 2008, Giroux has been a rising star for the Flyers, and has emerged as one of the best players in the NHL. Over the past two seasons, Giroux has accumulated 141 points 125 games. He also has 29 points in 21 playoff games over that span.

The Flyers were able to take on Giroux’ new $8.275 million annual salary as they have been aggressive in shedding salary. They bought out the contracts of goalie Ilya Bryzgalov and center Danny Briere.

The Flyers are expected to still pursue a goalie now that they have a little more cap flexibility. Last season, the team missed the playoffs for just the third time since 1994.
