Ian Kennedy Traded to Padres
Published at(SAN DIEGO) — The San Diego Padres acquired starting pitcher Ian Kennedy from the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday in exchange for reliever Joe Thatcher, a minor league player, and a draft pick.
The trade was completed just before Wednesday’s trade deadline.
“He is a very legitimate starting pitcher, something we need to take another step forward,” Padres general manager Josh Byrnes said. “Obviously in his best year he almost won a Cy Young Award so we’re happy to have him.”
The Padres hope Kennedy can pitch the way he did back in 2011, when he went 21-4. He is 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts this year and hasn’t won a game since June 1.
He is expected to make his first start for the Padres on Sunday against the New York Yankees.
