The Red Sox hope the 32-year-old Peavy can bolster their rotation for a long playoff run. They sent shortstop Jose Iglesias to the Detroit Tigers, who were seeking insurance in case All-Star Jhonny Peralta is suspended as part of MLB’s Biogenesis investigation.

Chicago acquired outfielder Avisail Garcia from the Tigers, who was regarded as the top power prospect in the Detroit farm system.  In addition to Garcia, the White Sox received three prospects from the Red Sox: right-handers Francelis Montas and J.B. Wendelken, as well as infielder Cleuluis Rondon.

Right-handed reliever Bryan Villarreal was also sent to the Red Sox from the Tigers to complete the deal.

“We’re really excited to bring Jake in here,” said Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington. “He’s obviously a proven major league starter with a ton of success in his career.”

Peavy, who was scratched from his start Tuesday night in anticipation of the trade, is 8-4 with a 4.28 ERA this season.
