(NEW YORK) — The New York Jets will start training camp on Thursday without their top playmaker. Wide receiver Santonio Holmes was placed on the physically unable to perform list Tuesday.
Holmes underwent foot surgery in October after a severe Lisfranc injury, missing the majority of the 2012 season.
He can be taken off the PUP list whenever he is medically cleared to practice.
Holmes is still hopeful he will play in the season opener on September 8 against old teammate Darrelle Revis and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“[We] definitely have to take our time, and I’ll be ready to go when the bell rings,” he said.
The 29-year-old Holmes has caught 358 passes for 5,507 yards and 35 touchdowns in seven seasons with the Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers.
