Mamnoon Hussain Elected President of Pakistan
Published at(ISLAMABAD, Pakistan) — Mamnoon Hussain, of the ruling PML-N party, was elected president of Pakistan on Tuesday, defeating Wajihuddin Ahmad of the PTI.
The position is elected by parliament and four provincial assemblies.
Hussain’s victory comes as no surprise as his party holds majority in the National Assembly and the assembly of Punjab – Pakistan’s most populated province – according to the BBC.
The office of the president is a ceremonial position, as most of his powers were transferred to the prime minister through a constitutional amendment by the previous government.
The party of the incumbent president, Asif Ali Zardari, boycotted the elections. Zardari’s fifth term in office will end September 8.
