The Grammy-winning singer, born in New York of Puerto Rican descent, set the record straight on Live with Kelly and Michael after people criticized the choice to have him sing “God Bless America” at the Major League Baseball All-Star Game earlier this week in New York.

Addressing remarks on Twitter that questioned why a foreign-born person was singing the patriotic song, Anthony said, “To set the record straight, I was born and raised in New York.”

“And I’m more Puerto Rican than ever, and more New York than ever,” he added to wild applause.

Some of the Twitter comments, gathered by a Tumblr site called Public Shaming, included racial slurs and referred to the 44-year-old singer as Mexican.

Similar comments were made last month when an 11-year-old mariachi singer born in Texas sang the national anthem during the NBA finals.
