According to a survey commissioned by Ergoton, a manufacturer of digital display mounts and furniture, Americans sit an average of 13 hours a day and sleep an average of eight hours for a grand inactive total of around 21 hours a day.

The survey finds that nearly 70 percent of full-time American workers hate sitting, yet 86 percent do it all day long, every day.  When workers do get up from their workspace, 56 percent are doing so to get food.

In addition to sitting at work, while eating meals and while commuting, 36 percent of Americans sit another one to two hours a day while watching TV.

Twenty-five percent of respondents spend one to two hours a day lounging around for things such as reading.

Twenty-nine percent of those polled sit for one to two hours a day at their home computer.

The survey was conducted by Research Now from June 21 to June 25, 2013, and involved 1,000 U.S. adults.
