“Orange Is the New Black” Debuts on Netflix
(NEW YORK) -- Netflix launches its third original series on Thursday, the comedy-drama Orange Is the New Black.
The 13-episode series, from Weeds creator Jenji Kohan, is based on the true story of a woman whose comfy, quiet life is turned upside down when she's sent to prison for over a year for a decade-old drug charge. Taylor Schilling stars. The series also stars Jason Biggs, Laura Prepon and Kate Mulgrew.
Kohan says the series strikes a tone similar to Weeds.
“It's not a dark, ominous women in prison thing. I think humor is a survival technique, and I think if you just did a straight drama about prison it would become so oppressive no one would want to be there. It would become oppressive to write,” says Kohan, adding, “And I find everything funny, which gets me in trouble sometimes.”
