The Pope’s arrival caused havoc in the streets of Rio as he traveled in a small Fiat van from the airport and his driver reportedly took a wrong turn. The crowds rushed around the car, which got stuck in the traffic while security tried to keep everybody away.

Pope Francis, however, seemed completely unperturbed and waved from his window and even kissed a baby that was brought to his window.

Speaking to dignitaries and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff at the presidential palace, Pope Francis wished that the first international trip of his pontificate would take him back to his beloved Latin America. He added that the principle reason for his visit to Brazil went beyond hits borders. He had come to meet young people coming from all over the world.

In keeping with World Youth Day, the Pope spoke about the importance of youth, giving them space and their force, for young people, he said, are the window through which the future enters the world.
