Red Sox Outlast Mariners 5-4 in 15 Innings
Published at(BOSTON) — The Boston Red Sox ended July and began August with just one goal in mind: regaining first place in the American League East.
Stephen Drew hit the game-winning RBI single and the Red Sox outlasted the Mariners 5-4 in a 15-inning game that helped them pass the Tampa Bay Rays in the standings.
The game lasted 5 hours, 3 minutes and ended shortly after midnight on Thursday.
The Mariners had runners on first and second with one out in the 15th inning, before Jonny Gomes turned a tremendous unassisted double play to get the Red Sox out of the jam.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Red Sox loaded the bases before Drew singled in Dustin Pedroia to end the game. Before Drew’s single, the team had just one hit in its previous 30 at-bats.
“Finally, we were able to push one across after quite a drought,” Boston manager John Farrell said.
Drew Britton (1-0) earned his first major league win after pitching two scoreless innings.
