Rutgers to Retire Eric LeGrand’s Jersey Number
Published at(NEWPORT, R.I.) — Rutgers announced on Tuesday that they will retire the jersey number of former defensive tackle Eric LeGrand, who was paralyzed during a game. LeGrand’s No. 52 will be the first jersey retired by the Scarlet Knights in the program’s 144-year history.
“We’re excited to be able to do that for him and his family,” head coach Kyle Flood said. “It will be a great day, not just for Rutgers football, but for the LeGrand family and everybody that’s associated with us.”
LeGrand broke two vertebrae while making a tackle during a kickoff return against Army in October 2010.
“What an honor thank you @RFootball this means the world to me,” LeGrand tweeted.
Rutgers will hold the ceremony on Sept. 14 when they play at home against Eastern Michigan.
