(NEW YORK) — SyFy announced Wednesday that they’re doing right by America and giving us the greatest gift of all: a follow-up to the made-for-TV film, Sharknado. (This time, disaster will strike New York City.)
“Every once in a while, there is a perfect storm — on television. The fans are clamoring for a sequel. Or perhaps it will be a prequel. What we can guarantee is that Sharknado 2 will be lots of fun,” Thomas Vitale, SyFy’s executive vice president of programming and original movies, said in a statement. “We’ll be announcing more details very soon. But we didn’t want our fans to worry they wouldn’t get their fill of more shark fin, I mean, fun next year.”
And while the film is in its nascent stages, the network has extended a challenge to fans, asking that they help name the movie with an appropriate subtitle via Twitter. The best submission will be used.
Sharknado, a disaster movie about — what else? — tornadoes that hurl killer sharks to land in Los Angeles, was only watched by 1.37 million viewers, but quickly became the network’s most social broadcast since its 1992 launch. More than 111,000 people tweeted 318,323 times about the film during its original broadcast.
