“Spider-Man” Star Questions Hero’s Sexuality
(NEW YORK) -- Andrew Garfield, the man who currently wears Spider-Man's tights, has been a lifetime fan of the Marvel comic book hero. He knows every twist the character has taken, at the hands of super villains like Doc Ock and at the hands of artists, who over the years shaped the hero and the universe in which he lives. But could Spidey be gay? Garfield says "why not."
With actress Shailene Woodley being bumped as Mary Jane in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Garfield has taken an open-minded view of her character, he told Entertainment Weekly. "I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ...I was like, 'What if MJ is a dude?' Why can't we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It's hardly even groundbreaking!...So why can't he be gay? Why can't he be into boys?"
Garfield went a step further, even casting his hypothetical same-sex partner. "I've been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since The Wire." Garfield enthuses. "He's so charismatic and talented. It'd be even better -- we'd have interracial bisexuality!"
For the record, the director of the new Spider-Man films, Marc Webb, has heard Garfield's pitch, and told the magazine, "Uh, are you kidding?"
The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which also stars Emma Stone as Peter Parker's girlfriend Gwen Stacy, as well as Jamie Foxx and Paul Giamatti, opens May 2, 2014.
