Stocks Climb to New Highs
(NEW YORK) -- U.S. markets added to last week's gains, pushing the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 to new highs. The Dow on Monday closed up 19.96 points at 15,484.26, while the S&P 500 added 2.31 points to close at 1,682.50.
The Nasdaq Composite closed up 7.41 points at 3,607.49.
Boeing shares surged Monday after it was announced that the plane's batteries did not appear to be the cause of a fire on one of its 787 Dreamliners at London's Heathrow airport Friday.
The Commerce Department says retail sales rose 0.4 percent in June from May -- a little less than expected. Americans spent more at retail businesses in June, buying more cars and trucks, furniture and clothes, but they cut back on many other purchases, a mixed sign for economic growth.
