US Markets Close with Modest Gains

Ben Hider/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Facebook’s stock pushed the Nasdaq Composite higher in Thursday trading, with the other major indexes moving between small gains and losses.
The Nasdaq added 25.59 points, closing at 3,605.19. The Dow Jones Industrials closed up 13.37 points, at 15,555.61.
The S&P 500 gained 4.31 points to close at 1,690.25.
Meanwhile, the government said unemployment claims are up again. The Labor Department says first-time claims jumped by 7,000 last week after a big drop the week before. The less volatile four-week average edged lower and remains at a level consistent with an improving job market.
