(NEW YORK) — Stocks spent most of the session in negative territory Wednesday, but finished with mixed results after investors heard the minutes from the Federal Reserve’s latest meeting.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 8.68 points at 15,291.66. The Nasdaq Composite added 16.50 points for the session to close at 3,520.76. The S&P 500 finished at 1,652.62, up just a fraction of a point.
Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke says the central bank will probably slow its bond purchases later this year and end them next year if the economy continues to improve.
Wednesday’s release of the minutes from June’s policy meeting showed many Fed members agreed that the job market’s improvement would have to be sustained before taking that step.
