iStockphoto/Thinkstock(MEXICO CITY) — A giant volcano in Mexico has disrupted more than 40 flights to the U.S. out of Mexico City.

Popocatepetl is spewing ash and steam into the sky.  The volcano is 40 miles away from Mexico City, but at nearly 18,000 feet tall, that’s spitting distance.

US Airways, United, Delta, American and Alaska Airlines have all canceled flights as a precaution — even though no ash has been reported in Mexico City.  Routes impacted include Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Phoenix and Denver.

Civil protection agencies have declared a seven-mile exclusion zone around the volcano’s base.
