Fans at Comic-Con in San Diego were already excited to hear from Man of Steel director Zack Snyder during one of the convention’s many question-and-answer panels Saturday.  However, they were whipped up into an absolute frenzy without as much as a single word: with the unveiling of the combination of Superman’s logo with Batman’s iconic symbol, the studio signaled both heroes will appear in a follow-up to Man of Steel.

Snyder explained before the reveal that he couldn’t give anything away about a second Superman film, but allowed he “pored through the DC Universe to look for a way to tell this thing.”  A “single element” he could share, however, required the mellifluous voice of Man of Steel co-star Harry Lennix, who strode onto the stage as the light dramatically dimmed to a spotlight.

Lennix directly quoted a passage from Frank Miller’s groundbreaking graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns, in which Superman comes to Gotham City to try to stop Batman’s vigilante ways at the president’s request.  In the climax, Batman gets the upper hand against Superman thanks to some kryponite and a powered suit to match the Kryptonian’s power, and utters the words that Lennix did on stage: “I want you to remember, Clark.  In all the years to come.  In all your most private moments.  I want you to remember my hand at your throat.  I want you to remember the one man who beat you.”

While the reference may have confused the crowd, what happened next, thanks to an overhead display, was nothing short of electric.  Superman’s “S” symbol appeared to applause, only to have those cheers turn to screams when the Batman symbol appeared behind it.

Warner Bros. says the new film will fly into theaters in the summer of 2015.  Although Henry Cavill will return as Superman, joining Man of Steel co-stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane, it’s not yet known who will fill Christian Bale’s cape and cowl as the Dark Knight and his alter-ego Bruce Wayne.
