Big Expectations for Alex Smith at Chiefs Camp

Al Messerschmidt/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — After giving up a second-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft and a conditional second- or third-round pick in 2014 to the San Francisco 49ers, Alex Smith must deliver for the Chiefs at quarterback.
“Ultimately, every team has to have a quarterback,” Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson said told The Kansas City Star on Wednesday. “I think we have the best in the league.”
Smith started nine games last season before suffering a head injury. The former No. 1 pick would sit on the sideline and watch Colin Kaepernick flourish and lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl.
“There are a lot of great ones, but over time, Alex has proven he can get it done,” Pederson told the newspaper. “He’s a sharp guy, he brings a wealth of knowledge, he’s experienced, he’s a proven winner the last couple of years, and he needs a team to embrace him.”
Smith finished seventh last season in QBR behind Robert Griffin III, Aaron Rodgers, Kaepernick, Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning.
