(ATLANTA) — Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward underwent surgery on Thursday to repair his fractured jaw, a day after he was hit by a pitch. Two plates were placed in Heyward’s jaw by Dr. Glenn Maron in Atlanta, one for each fracture.
The former All-Star suffered the injury during Wednesday’s victory against the New York Mets, when starter Jonathon Niese drilled him in his right jaw in the sixth inning.
In 352 at-bats this season, the 24-year-old Heyward is batting .253 with 13 home runs and 37 RBIs. He has scored 60 runs in 95 games this year.
