(NEW YORK) — The Washington Capitals officially signed free agent Mikail Grabovski on Friday. The center and the team agreed to a one-year, $3 million contract.
“Mikhail adds speed and offense to our lineup, and we are very pleased to have him sign with the Capitals,” general manager George McPhee said in a statement on Friday. “We believe he will be an excellent addition to our club.”
The Toronto Maple Leafs used a compliance buyout back in July to free themselves of the $21.5 million remaining on his five-year contract.
Grabovski had 29 goals and 29 assists in 2010-11 for Toronto, but his play decreased last season and he only scored nine goals and seven assists.
Washington lost center Mike Ribeiro to the Coyotes this offseason. Grabovski will become the No. 2 center behind Nicklas Backstrom.
