The Washington Nationals traded catcher Kurt Suzuki to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for Class-A starter Dakota Bacus Friday.

Suzuki spent his first 5 1/2 big league seasons in Oakland. He comes back to the team after the A’s lost catchers John Jaso (concussion) and Derrick Norris (broken big toe) to injury.

Suzuki has played in 79 games this season, hitting .222 with three home runs, 23 RBIs and two stolen bases.

According to The San Francisco Chronicle, Washington will pay half of Suzuki’s remaining 2013 salary (about $675,000), and half of Suzuki’s 2014 buyout.

The Athletics head into Friday night’s game with Baltimore 2 1/2 games behind Texas for the AL West lead.
