Aller/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — The Pittsburgh Steelers were hoping to lean on rookie running back Le’Veon Bell to carry the load in the backfield this season. But after suffering a Lisfranc injury in the preseason, Bell is expected to miss 6-8 weeks.

That is the best case scenario for the young running back. They are awaiting word on a second opinion on Bell’s injury to see if he needs surgery. If surgery is required, Bell could miss the entire season.

Bell was the Steelers’ second-round pick of the 2013 Draft, and they expected him to play a big role in the team’s offense. Instead they’ll have to be without him for the foreseeable future.

During his junior year at Michigan State, Bell was one of the best running backs in the country. He had 1,793 rushing yards along with 12 touchdowns. He also 32 passes out of the backfield.

The Steelers have had little luck when it comes to health at the running back position. LaRod Stephens-Howling didn’t play in the team’s last preseason game and Baron Batch left the same game with a stinger.

Isaac Redman and Jonathan Dwyer are expected to be the primary running backs the Steelers entering the season now.
