Fan Who Threw Banana at Orioles’ Adam Jones Apologizes
(NEW YORK) -- A San Francisco Giants fan, who threw a banana at Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones over the weekend, has issued an apology.
Alexander Poulides told the San Jose Mercury News that he had no racist intent when he committed the act. He claims that he grabbed a banana off a catering cart and threw it on the field out of frustration not racism.
The Giants went on to lose the game 10-2 and are in the midst of a season-long slump.
"I'm embarrassed and shocked by the outcome," Poulides told the newspaper. "In hindsight, I wish I didn't do it and I apologize. I'm very sorry."
Jones handled the incident in stride and is just trying to move on.
"It's unfortunate that things happen like that, but it ain't going to stop me, myself and the Baltimore Orioles," he said. "We have games to win. It's mid-August. I've got a bigger concern in my head than someone's ignorance or act of whatever."
The 28-year-old Jones is in the midst of another All-Star season for the Orioles, who are fighting for a playoff spot. In 118 games so far, Jones is batting a career-high .302 with 24 home runs so far in 2013.
