The decision marks the first time the car has been built America, as previous production for the vehicle took place in Mexico and China.

The expansion to the Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan will create 1,400 new jobs and attempt to meet growing customer demand for the car. The plant will manufacture 350,00 units each year.

“With its bold design and great fuel economy, Fusion has exceeded all of our expectations, with demand outstripping supply,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of The Americas. “Fusion in Flat Rock is a win for all of our stakeholders — including customers, employees and dealers.”

Fusion sales are up 13 percent this year. Through July, the company sold more than 181,000 Fusion vehicles.
