In his most recent start, Zito have up four earned runs in just three and-one-third innings pitched. That dropped him to 4-8 on the season with a 5.09 ERA.

With Zito’s performance slipping, the team has decided to take him out of the rotation.

“Sometimes it’s just time for a change,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “You get in a rut and it’s just kind of been that kind of year for Barry. He pitched so well last year. But we did this in 2011, backed him off, and he pitched well.”

Bochy added that he didn’t know how long Zito will be out of the rotation.

This is just the latest chapter in Zito’s embattled career with the Giants. After signing a seven-year, $126 million contract with the club prior to the 2007 season.

He has struggled mightily to live up to his lucrative contract, but was a key member of the team’s 2012 World Series Run. Zito 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA last postseason.
