James Franco says he had a “great time” at the roast, probably because he had incorrectly assumed beforehand that he would be the sole target of the jokes. Entertainment Weekly quotes him as saying, “I’ve never watched one of these roasts. I chose not to research this so I had no idea that they were going to be roasting each other [too]. I thought I’d be sitting here for two hours bearing the brunt of it so it was a huge relief.”

Entertainment Weekly
has published several of the jokes that were made at the expense of Franco as well as the other actors and comedians on hand, including Roast Master Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Sarah Silverman and Aziz Ansari.

There were many jokes regarding Franco’s past roles as gay men, including this one from Rogen: “Franco, you look like you’re asleep. Did you just read a James Franco book? In all seriousness, he is a very hardworking actor. He once told me he worked for 36 hours straight, which I don’t believe, the straight part, obviously.”

Rogen also made light of Franco’s critically-panned turn as Oscars host alongside Anne Hathaway in 2011: “Look at me doing all the talking while you sit there doing nothing. I feel like I’m co-hosting the Oscars with you.”

Franco himself cracked a few jokes on the same topic, saying the roast was his “punishment for the Oscars.” He also quipped, “You say I sucked at the Oscars. I was a genius at the Oscars. That was experimental tuxedo sleep art.”

Comedy Central Roast of James Franco premieres Monday, September 2, at 10 p.m. Eastern and Pacific time.
