Mark Sanchez Will Start Against Lions

Ronald C. Modra/Sports Imagery/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- A day after calling rookie quarterback Geno Smith's practice "brutal", New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan is going with Mark Sanchez in Saturday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

"QB decision made for this weekend: Mark Sanchez will start vs. Jacksonville," the Jets announced on their Twitter account on Thursday.

Sanchez got the nod over Smith in the Jets first preseason game against the Lions. He threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown on the Jets first drive against the Lions and also led them to a scoring drive.

Smith suffered a mild ankle sprain in the game against the Lions, but has not missed any practice time at camp.

The quarterback competition is expected to continue through the third game before a decision is made, according to the organization.
