In 117 games this season, the 35-year-old Byrd is batting .285 with a career-high 21 home runs and 71 RBIs in 425 at-bats.

The 33-year-old Buck is expected to back up starting catcher Russell Martin. In 101 games with the Mets, he batted .215 with 15 homers and 60 RBIs.

After making the deal, New York placed starting pitcher Matt Harvey on the 15-day disabled list due to a partially torn ligament in his elbow.
