Three days after Tsarnaev’s April 19 arrest, a trauma surgeon who treated him recounted the specific injuries during a hearing. The most severe injury was a high-powered gunshot wound entering the left inside of his mouth and exiting his lower face.

He also suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his extremeties, Dr. Stephen Ray Odom said in his testimony.

It is unclear from the documents whether any of the wounds were self-inflicted.

The medical report was part of a hearing to assess Tsarnaev’s ability to answer questions prior to his first appearance before a judge.

Odom said he was capable of answering questions and “definitely knows where he is.”

The 20-year-old was captured in a Watertown backyard after a day-long manhunt. He faces 30 charges including using a weapon of mass destruction after the April 15 marathon bombings killed three people and wounded hundreds. Tsarnaev and his older brother, who was killed after a shoot-out with police, allegedly killed an MIT officer.

Tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty to all counts.

The unsealed documents Monday included briefs filed in May by prosecutors and defense lawyers discussing access to the suspect’s prison records. Court records did not show which materials or information were obtained, reports the Boston Globe.
