Stewart will miss at least the first six weeks of the regular season. He signed a five-year, $36.5 million contract extension with the Panthers last year, but ankle injuries caused him to finish with just 333 rushing yards and one touchdown.

He underwent offseason surgery to repair the damage in both of his ankles, but his right ankle continued to bother him during training camp.

“I can spend all my energy being disappointed, or I can spend all my energy preparing myself for Week [7],” Stewart said.

DeAngelo Williams will be the starting running back for the Panthers to begin the 2013 season.
