(NEW YORK) — Major League Baseball suspended Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Ryan Dempster for five games and fined him an undisclosed amount for intentionally hitting New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez with a pitch during Sunday night’s game.
The right-hander hit Rodriguez on the left elbow on a 3-0 pitch in the top of the second inning. In the sixth, Rodriguez would get his revenge as he hit a solo home run off of Dempster. New York would come from behind to defeat Boston, 9-6.
After the game, Dempster said he was pitching inside to Rodriguez and wasn’t trying to hit him.
Also fined was Yankees manager Joe Girardi for his argument with umpire Brian O’Nora after Dempster was allowed to stay in the game.
