Perez was hit in the catcher’s mask by a foul tip in Saturday’s win over the New York Mets and appeared to be shaken up.  He finished the game, which lasted 12 innings.  He was taken to a hospital and stayed overnight undergoing various concussion tests.

The Royals do not believe the injury to their 23-year-old All-Star catcher is serious, but chose to place him on the special concussion disabled list as a precaution.

Perez is hitting .278 with four home runs and 43 RBIs this season.

Brett Hayes was called up by the Royals to replace Perez, who was playing for Triple-A Omaha.  He will back up George Kottaras, who now becomes the starter.
