Sandy Hook Responders to Receive $2.5 Million from Government

Mario Tama/Getty Images(NEWTOWN, Conn.) — The Justice Department will provide $2.5 million in funding to Connecticut law enforcement agencies that assisted in response to the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School last year, Attorney General Eric Holder announced Wednesday.
The Connecticut State Police, the Newtown, Conn. Police Department and partner agencies will be compensated for costs like overtime and forensics related to the incident.
Funding includes $882,812 for the Town of Monroe, $602,293 for the Town of Newtown and $663,444 allocated for Connecticut State Police. More than two dozen other police departments who responded to the shootings and provided security for months afterward will also be reimbursed.
“Providing support to the law enforcement agencies that responded to the horrific scene that awaited them at Sandy Hook Elementary School is one small action we can take to bring healing to a community that’s been devastated,” Holder said. “Just over eight months after this senseless tragedy, those who lost their lives, and those who continue to grieve, remain in our thoughts and prayers.”
Six staff members and 20 students died on Dec. 14 after 20-year-old Adam Lanza went on a shooting spree at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Funding will be provided through the Bureau of Justice Assistance’s Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant Program.
