(HOUSTON) — Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel has been suspended for the first half of Saturday’s season opener against Rice by the NCAA, for an inadvertent violation regarding the signing of certain autographs.
The Aggies and the NCAA released a joint statement Wednesday saying there is no evidence that the reigning Heisman Trophy winner received money in exchange for autographs, based on statements by Manziel and current information that is available.
Under the terms set by the NCAA, Manziel will also need to address his team regarding the situation and lessons learned. Texas A&M will also need to revise future education concerning student-athletes signing autographs for individuals with multiple items.
The NCAA says if additional information does come to light, they will review and consider further action if needed.
