Texas A&M Silent about Johnny Manziel’s Status

Ronald Martinez/Getty Images (COLLEGE STATION, Texas.) --  The Texas A&M Aggies open up their season at home against Rice on Saturday, but are still not sure if they will have quarterback Johnny Manziel under center at kickoff.

The NCAA is investigating whether the Heisman Trophy winner was paid for his autograph, a potential violation of amateurism rules that could threaten his eligibility.

Athletic director Eric Hyman said that he had instructed everyone in the program not to talk about Manziel during media availability, but that didn't stop the abundance of questions from being asked on Tuesday.

"We're not discussing that," head coach Kevin Sumlin said. "I thought we went over that right from the beginning."

Manziel has taken all of the practice reps with the starters, and unless the NCAA has anything to say about it, the school has up until kickoff to make any decision on whether Manziel starts.

Should Manziel not be able to play Saturday, the team could start either junior Matt Joeckel or freshman Kenny Hill against the Owls.
