The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 48.38 points at 14,824.51.  Though, the blue chips index is down 5.3 percent since its Aug. 2 high, it has increased 13 percent for the year.

The Nasdaq Composite finished the session at 3,593.35, adding 14.83 points, while the S&P gained 4.48 points, closing at 1,634.96.

Energy stocks led Wednesday advances. The price of oil edged down from $112 a barrel overnight and traded at around $110.

Meanwhile, the latest figures from the government show the improvement in the job market is widespread. The Labor Department says unemployment rates fell in two-thirds of the nation’s largest metro areas in July. The nationwide unemployment rate fell to a four-and-a-half-year low of 7.4 percent last month as employers added 162,000 jobs.
