(LOS ANGELES) — Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly pulled Yasiel Puig from Wednesday’s 4-0 win over the Chicago Cubs for disciplinary reasons, but would not give an exact reason as to why Puig was benched.
Puig, who is batting .346 on the season, was benched in favor of utility man Skip Schumaker.
After the 22-year-old Puig struck out in the third inning, he slammed his bat to the turf in frustration.
“All those things could be true and maybe they all could possibly lead to what went on today, but really, more than anything, it always gets back, to me, to Skip gave us a better chance,” Mattingly said. “I love these guys. I love all my players and I see the good in all of them, and it’s my responsibility, I feel like, to give us the best chance to win and make decisions based on what’s best for the whole team.”
Mattingly expects Puig to be back in the lineup on Friday night when the Dodgers take on the San Diego Padres.
