The first seven episodes of Mad Men’s seventh season, collectively dubbed “The Beginning,” will air next spring.  The final seven episodes, referred to by AMC as “The End of an Era,” will premiere in the spring of 2015.  Past seasons of Mad Men featured 13 episodes.

Series creator Matthew Weiner explains the decision by stating, “We plan to take advantage of this chance to have a more elaborate story told in two parts, which can resonate a little bit longer in the minds of our audience.”

AMC divided the final season of Breaking Bad in a similar manner. The first half of the season aired last year, with the show returning from hiatus in August. Its finale airs a week from Sunday.
