American Airlines Announces Plan to Hire 1,500 New Pilots
Published at | Updated at(NEW YORK) — American Airlines announced on Monday a plan to hire approximately 1,500 new pilots in the next five years, the largest hiring the company has undertaken in more than 10 years.
The airline intends to open a job posting on Tuesday with training classes for the new hires taking place this winter.
American recently expanded flights to a number of international destinations and took delivery of a number of new aircraft. Those changes, combined with projected pilot retirements and new Federal Aviation Administration rules requiring rest time and duty time limits for pilots starting next year, allow them to hire additional pilots.
American’s vice president, Capt. John Hale, called the move “an important step toward a bright future at the new American.” Hale also pointed to the proposed merger with US Airways as an example of his airline’s aim to “provide even greater opportunities” for its employees.
