The attack seriously injured a child and two police officers, the BBC reports.

The bomb targeted the country’s Egypt’s Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim.

Ibrahim was not hurt. The bomb went off near his home in Nasr City. But at the time of the attack, around 10:30 a.m. local time, the interior minister had already left his home by car.

The violent crackdown by Egypt’s ruling military on supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi has deepened divisions in Egyptian society, which many fear will lead to more bloodshed.

The U.S. Embassy released a statement urging United States citizens in Egypt to avoid target-prone areas including large gatherings, demonstrations and unsecured areas.
