(NEW YORK) — The EJ Manuel era is set to get underway in Buffalo as the team has named the rookie its starting quarterback for week 1 against the New England Patriots.
Manuel missed half of the preseason after undergoing a minor procedure on his left knee on Aug. 18.
He was expected to miss one or two games of the regular season, but he’s progressed quickly enough that the team feels comfortable putting him back on the field.
Jeff Tuel, an undrafted free agent rookie, was set to fill in for Manuel.
Manuel was the 16th pick in this past April’s draft, and the first quarterback selected.
He played four seasons at Florida State, and his strong combine shot him up draft boards.
In two preseason games, Manuel, 23, completed 26 of 33 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.
