He discusses his battle with the disease in an article posted on the website of the cable network HLN, which airs his show, Dr. Drew On Call.

The 55-year-old Pinsky begins the article by writing, “While many of you were celebrating the Fourth of July, I was at home on my couch recovering from a radical robotic prostatectomy. Four hours of surgery had left me in great pain, without an appetite, and in need of help from my college-age son, Jordan, to get up and lie down. But I was cancer-free for the first time in at least two years.”

Pinsky recalls that in 2011 he felt “sick here and there,” and that at the urging of his wife he visited a doctor for a check-up. Following an ultrasound, he was diagnosed with inflammation of the prostate, but a subsequent biopsy revealed a low-grade tumor.

As time went on, Pinsky — who notes that his father and uncle also battled prostate cancer — underwent two more biopsies, and ultimately elected to have surgery. Pinsky writes that the procedure he had in July uncovered that the tumor “had a ‘finger’ on it that was millimeters from being contained. It was ready to spread, and would have, had it not been removed.”

Pinsky says he returned to work 10 days after the surgery. He continues, “The only remnant of cancer surgery is six small scars on my torso. They are fading fast. I’m hopeful I am cured.”
