Omar Abul-Magd was taken into custody late last week for riding his donkey through his town in Qena province.

It turns out the farmer scrawled General Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi’s name on his beast of burden and for good measure, topped the donkey’s head with a military-style cap to leave no doubt who he was making fun of.

Even if Egypt was not in a state of emergency because of fears of an Islamist revolution, Abul-Magd would have probably wound up in prison anyway because denigrating the military leadership is considered a no-no.

El-Sissi helped engineer the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi last July 3 after his critics complained that the leader was only interested in turning Egypt into an Islamic state.
