Nyad, 64, attempted to swim from Havana to three times between 2010 and 2012, but was stopped by exhaustion and jellyfish encounters.

Nyads began her swim on Saturday and expected to take about 80 hours to swim from Havana to a point between Key West and Marathon, Fla., about 110 miles away.

A 4 p.m. Sunday update from Nyad’s website says that she has swum 63.25 miles from her starting point, farther than any of her previous attempts.

Nyad is escorted by handlers who are allowed to feed her, rub chafing cream on her shoulders, apply sunscreen to her lips and make sure she stays hydrated.
