While the European Union agrees that the attack, just outside of Damascus, was likely perpetrated by the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, they are not offering their support for military action just yet. The leaders of the European nations believe a strike should wait for a United Nations Inspectors’ report. President Obama remains focused on rounding up support among Congress.

The EU statement was released after a two-day meeting in Lithuania which included discussions with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. The EU had struggled to come to a unanimous stance on Syria, says the Wall Street Journal, but Saturday’s statement spoke of unilateral agreement.

While the Obama administration has called for military action on the heels of the alleged chemical attack, support both internationally and within Congress has been difficult to come by. Obama hopes to rally larger support domestically when he speaks publicly on Tuesday.
