Researchers from the University of South Florida began digging on Saturday and continued the excavation on Sunday. According to the Miami Herald, the former inmates reported horrific beatings.

Researchers hope to locate four to six bodies by the end of the excavation on Tuesday before resuming the dig at a later date. The goal of the investigation is to identify the bodies and determined how they died.

An investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement determined in 2010 that the allegations could not be substantiated, says the Herald. The school segregated white and black inmates, and the excavation is underway in the area where black inmates were held.

One researcher speculated to the Herald that another cemetery, in the white inmate section, has not yet been found.
