Health Care Exchanges: What Are They? How Do They Work?

Creatas Images/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — The new health care law affects all of us, but the people it helps the most are those who have not been able to get insurance before.
“Doesn’t matter whether you’re poor, middle income, high income — anyone can purchase coverage in the exchange. The question really is whether one is eligible for a tax credit subsidy…to offset a portion of that premium,” says Brad Herring from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins.
He says the less you make, the less you will pay. That’s because you would be getting help from the government in covering your premiums.
“They would pay subsidized premiums…based on percentage of their income,” Herring tells ABC News Radio.
Some states have opted not to offer the exchanges and are letting the federal government run them — for now.
